5 Wondrous Winter Books

January 21, 2018

This is a quick list of five wonderful winter books that share a love of everything snow, winter and adventure. All of these winter books feature gorgeous illustrations and pictures that help kids learn about everything that’s so magical with this season.

As you all know, I’m a book fanatic and love making these book lists. We have so many books, and it makes my life a bit easier when I separate them into seasons and only have them available for limited times through the year. It gives the book more wonder and exclusivity when it is in reach and helps the kids feel more connected with what’s going on in the world around them.

Owl Moon by Jane Yolen

This was one of my favorite books as a child. I remember playing in the woods a lot growing up and during winter I always wanted to go ‘owling’ like the father and daughter do in this book. It’s a sweet story of their bond and the bond we can have with nature.

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

Another childhood favorite, The Snowy Day shows all that’s so wonderful on the first snowfall. While my son did experience winter last year as a 6 month old, this year he’s shown so much interest in snow. He looks to the sky and says “Wow!” and sticks his little tongue out. He’s really started to love this book.

 Snowballs by Lois Ehlert

I fell in love with this author/illustrator when I received her book ‘Planting a Rainbow’ as a baby shower gift. The books are so beautiful and the stories are easy to read and my kids just love them.

SNOW by Uri Shulevitz

A new one in our winter books collection, SNOW is a great little story about a little boy fascinated by snow. It’s beautiful illustrations show how the city transforms into a winter wonderland.

The Mitten by Jan Brett

Another book I grew up reading, this is another author/illustrator. The story of the animals all climbing into the mitten and the little boy’s winter adventure is fun for the kids to follow along.

I love the Snowy Day! What a classic. The Winter Street series by Elin Hilderbrand are great “grown-up” winter books.
