We love watching Halloween movies! It’s a perfect way to get in the spirit of ghosts and goblins with the kids. Last year was my daughter Fota’s first ever Halloween, so I got to introduce her to some of my all time favorite movies from when I was a kid and she found some newer ones I had never heard of.
Here are a handful of kid-friendly Halloween movies I think your family would love:
This is one of my most favorite Halloween movies of all time. I LOVED watching this when I was younger and now I’m even more excited to share it with my children. The story of the Sanderson sisters is a thrill to watch. Funny anecdote — a woman dressed up as Winifred Sanderson (Bette Midler’s character) came to my mom’s Halloween ‘open house’ in full character last year and walked around then left. Afterwards we both looked at each other and asked if we knew who it was. We didn’t, and later found out it was one of her neighbors from up the street.
Another classic — I grew up watching this movie every Halloween season. It’s always on TV at some point and I just love the nostalgia I feel when watching the Peanuts gang. Linus was always one of my favorite characters of the bunch and his dedication to the Great Pumpkin is so sweet. It’s funny how as a kid these movies seemed so much longer, because now when I watch them I can’t believe how fast they seem to go by.
This is a newer favorite of ours. I found this movie last year because my daughter Fota was really into watching anything Halloween. It’s a cute movie about a teenager who discovers she’s a witch and then is traveling between realms and fighting ghosts and monsters. The special effects are old-school for sure, but I think it’s a fun movie for kids. There’s several sequels too, which I didn’t really care for, but my daughter seems to enjoy them.
To be honest, I didn’t really love this movie when it first came out when I was 10. It kind of creeped me out. It wasn’t until later in my twenties I watched it again and grew to love it. But that being said, I think it’s a great movie for kids. While it does tell the story of Jack Skellington’s plan to bring Christmas to Halloween Town — this movie is great for both holidays really. I’ve really loved all of Tim Burton’s films, I find them so creative and unique and enjoy sharing them with my family.
I had a small crush on Devon Sawa as a tween, so any movie he was in I HAD to watch. This is a cute movie about Casper ‘the friendly ghost’ and how he befriends the human daughter of a ‘ghost doctor’ that moves in and tries to get him and his scarier ghost uncles to stop haunting the old house. The special effects of animation interacting with humans is pretty good for it’s time and it’s a good mix of silly and spooky so a perfect family film.
So there’s five of our favorite Halloween inspired movies. My tween daughter is starting to think she wants to watch some scarier flicks, but I’m not convinced she’s ready quite yet, so I’m hoping we can just stick with ones like this for now.
